Rounding and display options

risr/ assess offers several configuration options for the rounding and display of scoring values applied at both the exam and individual item levels. By combining these options users can achieve myriad ways in which to process and present scores and examination outcomes back to candidates.

Rounding settings are a site level configuration and can only be changed in the background. If you would like to discuss these options or talk through any specific configuration please get in contact via the Service Desk.

Rounding options

The PASS_SCORE_ROUNDING option specifies the number of decimal places to which cut scores (both exam and item level) are mathematically rounded. The rounded value is then used as the comparator for determining the pass or fail outcome.

Where item scores are mathematically rounded for the purposes of making an item-level pass/fail decision, the calculated overall exam score is always made to full precision.

The default setting in risr/ assess is for no mathematical rounding to take place unless requested otherwise.

In addition to being able to specify the number of decimal places to which values are rounded, it is also possible to set the rounding behaviour, as follows:

decimal.ROUND_CEILING	Rounds towards infinity
decimal.ROUND_DOWN	Rounds towards 0
decimal.ROUND_FLOOR	Rounds towards -infinity
decimal.ROUND_HALF_DOWN	Rounds to the nearest integer with ties being rounded towards 0
decimal.ROUND_HALF_EVEN	Rounds to the nearest integer with ties being rounded towards the nearest even integer
decimal.ROUND_HALF_UP	Rounds to the nearest integer with ties being rounded away from 0
decimal.ROUND_UP	Rounds away from 0
decimal.ROUND_05UP	Rounds away from 0 if the last digit (after rounding towards 0) would be 0 or 5; otherwise round towards 0

The default setting in risr/ assess is decimal.ROUND_HALF_EVEN unless requested otherwise.

Display options

The SCORE_ROUNDING_DISPLAY and PASS_SCORE_ROUNDING_DISPLAY settings control the number of decimal places to which values are displayed (but are not necessarily mathematically rounded). This can be used in conjunction with the PASS_SCORE_ROUNDING setting as appropriate.

The CFR_ROUNDING_DISPLAY option denotes the number of decimal places to which scores are displayed in the Candidate Feedback Report.

The rounding display value is set to 2 decimal places unless otherwise requested (except for PASS_SCORE_ROUNDING_DISPLAY which is set to 6 by default).
