Where items share properties that render them too similar to appear in the same exam together, you can use the enemy items feature to help manage this process. Setting an item as an enemy of another item means they will not be picked in the same system-generated item set. Where items are manually selected, the item set will display a warning if the two items are picked together.
Enemy links will cascade which means that, as well as direct enemy links, "enemies of enemies" will also be highlighted.
There are two methods for creating enemy items:
- Cloning items: Cloned items can automatically be linked to the original item as a cloned item. When creating the cloned item, you have the option to link the cloned item as an enemy item when duplicated by using the checkbox to set the new item to be an enemy item of the original.
- Linking items: Link enemy items of the same item type to prevent similar items from being added to an item set. A warning message will appear when creating an item set with enemy items.
Linking enemy items
To link enemy items:
-
Step 1 of 3
Navigate to the item information page and click Link to item.
-
Step 2 of 3
Using the Link to item field, search for items with the same item type to add as an enemy item and click Create link. You can search for an item by the item number, the title of the item or by the content in the summary.
-
Step 3 of 3
Once the items are linked, they can be viewed and managed in the linked items section of the item information page.
- Link to item: Linking additional items as enemy items. This will notify you with a warning message when included in the same item set.
- Clear enemy links: Remove all related enemy items from the linked items.
Once enemy items are linked to another item, you can export a list of the enemy item IDs by exporting the items using batch operations.
