To log into an exam as an examiner or a marshal, open up the app and select the relevant session from the list of current exams. This will take you to the following page:
From here, there are two options for logging into the iPad application:
- Entering their credentials manually
- Scanning a QR code
Manual Credential Entry
Examiners or marshals can manually type in their password and then press the Login button to enter the exam. These login credentials can be found on the View Logins page of the relevant exam session, under the ID/Pass column.
The password is a concatenation of the examiner's ID, as defined in their examiner record, and a unique 'letter of the day'. This letter is randomly generated when you publish an exam and is prefixed to the IDs of all examiners and marshals allocated to that exam to make the password. If you reset and re-publish an exam then you will have the choice to use the original letter of the day, select a new letter or randomly generate a new one:
There is a configuration setting that disables the letter of the day feature. Turning it off will mean that examiners can use their IDs without any prefixes to log into exam sessions that they are allocated to. Please contact us via the service desk if you would like this configuration setting changed on your site.
QR Code
Instead of logging in manually, the examiner or marshal can tap the 'Scan QR Code' button to open the device's camera. By scanning their login code, they'll be taken directly into the exam.
The user can toggle between the device's front and back cameras by tapping on the camera feed. The default camera is the front one, however this can be changed to the back camera by changing a configuration setting.
Like the letter of the day, these QR codes are generated when an exam is published. You can access a session's QR codes via the dashboard by clicking on the 'view' dropdown button and then 'print login details examiners'.
The codes will be displayed as badges, which can be exported to a PDF document so that you can print them out and disseminate them to the examiners or stations.
By default, resetting and re-publishing an exam will generate new QR codes, rendering previous ones invalid. For OSCEs with multiple sessions, examiners and marshals will need unique QR codes for each session.
However, there are configuration settings that can change these behaviours. The options are as follows:
| Setting | Behaviour |
| Unique (default) | The QR code is session-bound for the published exam, and republishing generates new codes |
| Session | The QR code is session-bound for the published exam, but republishing will not generate new codes |
| Exam block | The QR code can be used to access any session that the examiner or marshal is allocated to in the exam block. If scanned from the list of exams it will take them to the first “in progress” session, or if they select the session first then they can log into that session with the same QR code. Republishing will not generate new codes |
