Selecting item sets for the exam

The second box on the exam setup screen is for you to pick the item set(s) to be used in the exam. Remember that several item sets can be used if the exam is set to be run using more than one block.

Choosing the item set

To choose an item set:

  Assuming the date has already been set, click Pre-select item sets.

  On the next screen an item set is suggested based on whichever exam blueprint has been chosen. Remember that both item sets and exams must be based on an exam blueprint.

  

  Should you wish to, you can change the suggested item set by clicking remove and choosing an alternative. Otherwise click Approve item set list.

  The system will then return you to the main exam builder screen where you can see that the option to lock your changes to the item set has now been enabled. Further options under the candidate box have also become available.

  

Change the item set selection

If you need to change the suggested item set you can replace it with another as long as that item set shares the same exam blueprint.

  From the exam builder screen click Make manual changes.

  There are two options on the next page; Modify and Replace. The modify option will take you into the item set to you can make any changes inside of it. If you want to change the item set to another, click Replace.

  You will then see a list of all of the approved item sets associated with the exam blueprint. You can filter the list using a search term in the search bar, then click Select as replacement next to you chose item set.

  Finally, use the back to exam link to return to the exam builder and lock your changes.

  

Update Obsolete Item Sets

Like items, item sets follow a strict version control process and this is discussed in detail in the respective articles. Remembering the key principle (that versions of items go into versions of item sets which go into exams), the system will detect if changes are made to either the item set or the items within the set. In this situation you will need to ensure you pull in the most up-to-date version(s) into to the exam.

A similar principle applies if you wish to make a change to an item or item set in a published exam. The version control process stops changes cascading into live exams, so you must first reset the exam then create a new version of the item or item set and follow the respective processes to eventually pull those changes into the exam.

However, like we saw with the Update items option in the item set, risr/ assess helps us out with this task at the exam level.

If the system detects a change you will see a warning under the item sets box. Click make manual changes.

The warning on the next page tells us that the item set is now obsolete (i.e. it has been superseded by a newer version). Click Update obsolete to pull in the most up-to-date version.
